TORRINGTON – In honor of Military Appreciation Night on Friday in Torrington, the Lady Trailblazers sported special jerseys and went on to sweep Newcastle in three sets.
Torrington picked up the win in the first set 25-13, and that was the closest set of the match. In the second. They bested the Lady Dogies 25-11 and continued their hot play into the third, winning 25-7.
Adia Sherbeyn had a game to remember, recording 11 kills, 11 digs, eight aces and a block. Her marks in kills, digs and aces were all team-highs. Logan Murphy tied Sherbeyn for the team-lead in kills, with 11. Murphy rounded out her stat line with two aces and six digs.
In the back line, Taylor Walsh piled up eight digs, which she paired with three aces, a kill and an assist. Brooklyn Tucker and Katelynn Wright topped the list in assists, with 15 apiece. Wright also had two aces and two digs in the win, while Tucker chipped in eight digs. At the net, Paige Miller led the way with three blocks, while Brielle Bivens added another two and Nakalyn Garner kicked in one.
Torrington 3, Thermopolis 0
After their big win Friday night, the Lady Blazers made the return trip to Thermopolis for the second time in a week. They continued their solid play, sweeping the Lady Bobcats. The match Saturday started the way Friday’s match ended, with a 25-7 set-win by Torrington. The second set was closer, but the Lady Blazers still picked up the 25-17 win. The Lady Bobcats put up a fight in the third, but still fell 25-21.
Murphy had a stellar game, recording 19 kills and two blocks, which were team-highs, and seven digs, Sherbeyn led the way again in both aces (nine) and digs (13), while chipping in seven kills.
In the kill department, Garner (four), Miller (three) and Ashley Schlagel (three) rounded out the top contributors. Garner and Schlagel also had a block apiece. Tucker, who led the team with 17 assists, was third with six digs, just ahead of Wright, who had five.
With two wins over quadrant opponents, the Lady Blazers sit atop the standings with an overall record of 6-8 and a quadrant record of 2-0. Torrington hosted quadrant foe Douglas on Tuesday after press time. The Lady Blazers return to their home floor Friday in a Homecoming match against Buffalo. The varsity game has a first-serve time of 5 p.m.
