Mary Lynn Alameda

Nov. 9, 1946 – Sept. 7, 2017

TORRINGTON - Our beloved Mary Lynn has moved on to ride horses in heaven. Following a battle with cancer, she passed peacefully on Sept. 7, 2017, at Community Hospital in Torrington.
Mary was born Nov. 9, 1946 in Rawlins to Leland “Buck” and Fern Baker Alameda. She grew up in Rawlins, graduating from Rawlins High School in 1965 and Casper College in 1967.
Mary had a lifelong love and passion for horses, beginning as a toddler. Her horsemanship led her to three rodeo queen crowns: Carbon County in 1965, Lander Old Timers in 1987, and Wendover Old Timers in 1988.
She competed most of her life as a barrel racer and belonged to the Girl’s Rodeo Association and the Old Timers Rodeo Association.
In addition to horses, Mary had a love for animals in general. She always owned at least one horse and one dog, but usually more of each, plus a cat or two, and they were collectively known as her “Four Foots.”
Mary Lynn was a “people person,” having worked as a restaurant hostess, bartender, blackjack dealer, bank teller and grocery clerk. She never met a stranger and is remembered fondly by many in the Torrington area as the drive-up window teller at First National Bank (Points West), and as a cashier at both Kelly’s Super and Main Street Market. She enjoyed gardening and was a proficient artist and an expert seamstress.
Survivors include siblings Karen (Cliff) Allison, Glen (Elaine) Alameda, and Barbara Jo Rodgers; nephews Don Kumpula, BJ (Karen) Alameda, Bo (KayCee) Alameda, Casey (Bobbie) Alameda, and Zac Joe; nieces Kathy (Russ) Kirlin, Kim (Greg) Earl, and Lacy (Luke) Joe-Polichio; several great-nieces and nephews; and one horse, Little Bit.
Preceding her in death were her parents; nephew, Darryl Kumpula; and niece, Misty Lynn Cully.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, at the Yoder Community Center.
Condolences may be sent to: PO Box 364, Torrington, WY, 82240.
Memorials may be given in her name to Festival of Hope, Attn: Jennifer Hiltgen, 3911 Avenue B - Suite G100, Scottsbluff, NE, 69361.
